Do Physicians Know the Facts on Nutrition? MD versus RD

We all know the saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' and the relationship between what we eat and our overall health. But should your doctor be the one helping you to determine what you should be eating to keep you healthy?

A Healthy Twist on Classic Alfredo Sauce

Pasta please! Every time I think about preparing an indulgent meal, I turn to my all time favourite food: pasta! Because I enjoy eating pasta so much, I am always looking for new ways to add a healthier twist to my favourite dishes. Whenever I am out to eat at a restaurant, I usually gravitate towards rich and creamy pasta dishes loaded with veggies. So, I decided to make a healthier version of the classic Alfredo sauce that does not sacrifice flavour!

Talking about Teff: The New Ancient Grain

Move over quinoa, there is a new nutritionally packed grain on the scene: teff. Well actually, teff is far from new, although it's just becoming popular in North American diets. Teff is a small grain that resembles a poppy seed. Teff grows well even in challenging climates, making it a staple grain in places like Ethiopia. It is most commonly used to make injera, a popular ethiopian flatbread (aka an edible plate). It comes in a wide range of varieties from ivory to a dark reddish brown (the lighter the colour, the milder the flavour teff will have). Overall, teff has a very pleasant, mild nutty flavour making it useful in a variety of cooking and baking applications.

Easy Lentil Spaghetti Sauce

With all the busy hustle and bustle of starting up again in the New Year, it can sometimes be challenging to create healthy, yet convenient meals for the family. This time of year, we often also have our budgets in mind after holiday spending.  I love this lentil pasta sauce for its taste, nutrition, convenience and cost savings. This recipe is modelled after a traditional ground beef spaghetti sauce, although it packs a little extra nutritional punch with lentils added rather than hamburger.
